Each floor consists of a maze filled with monsters, and a randomly placed locked door leading to the next level. The monsters get progressively more difficult as the game progresses, beginning with simple slimes and culminating with Druaga himself. Gilgamesh comes equipped with a sword, which he can use to defeat monsters, and a shield, which can be used to block magical attacks. To do this, he must traverse through 60 floors of an immense tower. The player assumes the role of the hero Gilgamesh, whose goal is to rescue the maiden Ki from the demon Druaga.

However, in recent years, the series has been retconned as being set in the fantasy kingdom of 'Babylim'.Ī 2008 anime series, beginning with The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk, uses the game as its back story, though is set many decades later. Originally the game and its sequels had no specific setting other than 'the tower'. Its first appearance outside Japan was in the third compilation of the Namco Museum series for the PlayStation and also appears on the Nintendo DS, PSP and Xbox 360 version of said series.

One terrible day, the kingdom of Sumeria raided Babylon and conquered them.
The prince of Babylon, Gilgamesh was in love with a Maiden of Goddess Ishtar, named Ki. The Blue Crystal Rod was safely contained in heaven, out of harm's reach, and shined its peaceful light down on Babylon. The city of Babylon, near the Euphrates River, was protected by the gods.

And finally, throughout the Easy and Normal levels of difficulty, the player can assign and reassign spirit points to particular attributes of Gil's, in order to customize him any way the player wishes.Ī patch to translate the ROM file of this game from Japanese to English has been released. He must also select and activate particular items when he wishes to use them (much like Link does in The Legend of Zelda).
Gil can choose which components of armor he wears, out of all those that he has collected. The way items and equipment work are substantially different.

Unlike the arcade, the goddess Isthar is present to provide players with hints that guide them in the right direction so that they can succeed, although the Pro game leaves the player to their own devices. On nearly every floor, a treasure chest can be collected, but the method to reveal the chest is different for each floor. Just as in the original, you control the Babylonian hero of legend, Gilgamesh, as you guide him through all 60 floors of the tower. It was only released in Japan due to the fact that the arcade game failed to garner popularity outside of Japan.

The update includes improved graphics with a three-quarters view of the world, expanded story line, greater character customization, and all new puzzles to solve. The Tower of Druaga for the PC-Engine is not a port of the original arcade game, but rather an updated remake.
